Mission Statement
The William S. Hart Union High School District will be a safe learning community, where students and staff create a culture of respect, based on equity and inclusion, and where differences are valued and are seen as an asset, not as a liability.

Welcome to the Hart District Diversity Web Page!

This page has been established to provide community members with information about events and activities that promote a "culture of respect" among all students and staff in the Hart District. We hope that you will visit often to learn more about our efforts to foster diversity awareness and appreciation in our school community.

Saugus HS sends "every" student to the Museum of Tolerance

In 2009, with the financial assistance of a local benefactor, Saugus High School principal Bill Bolde sent the school's entire 9th grade class to visit the Museum of Tolerance, in Los Angeles. Upon their return to campus, student expressions about their experience were so powerful that Mr. Bolde set a goal of sending each succeeding 9th grade class to the Museum, with a goal of having a school where "every student" had toured the museum, which focuses not only on the historic Holocaust, but also on the national and world struggle for human and civil rights. This spring, the fourth consecutive class of 9th graders made the trek to the Museum and with that trip, Saugus may be the only school of its size to have virtually an entire student body that has attended the Museum of Tolerance. In addition to the students, the entire Saugus faculty visited the Museum during a non-instructional day in 2005 and again in 2009.

Once the students return from the Museum, their experience doesn't end. Social Studies and English teachers continue to explore the historic and contemporary themes of the Museum in class, helping the students fully appreciate the lessons taught through Museum's interactive exhibits, docents and presenters.

The Association of California School Administrators (Region XV) has awarded the Hart District its "Valuing Diversity" award for 2012. In 2008, the District received statewide recognition from the California School Boards Association, earning the coveted Golden Bell Award for School Safety Programs. Currently, more than 2,000 students are directly involved in diversity program leadership roles in Hart District schools.

Youth Summit
On November 27, more than 350 students from Hart District junior high schools and from Castaic Middle School gathered at the City of Santa Clarita Activities Center for a day of activities designed to break down social barriers and to build strong intergroup relations between schools and communities. The theme of this annual event is "Respecting Ourselves Respecting Each Other", and was highlighted by exercises led by students from Valencia High School's STRIVE program and leadership students from West Ranch High School's ASB. During this day long event, students explored topics such as stereotyping, self-confidence/body image, and prejudice.
