Caring Hart District Students Plan Electronic Waste Recycling Events Print
Monday, 03 January 2011 14:21
Hart District students care about the environment and want to help protect it for future generations. Several Hart District schools are planning free Electronic Waste Recycling events as school fundraisers and to support a reduction in E-Waste that is currently a major contributor to landfills. Certified E-Waste recyclers have been contracted to assist students with the collection process.

Electronics that will be accepted include: Computer monitors and towers, TV's, plasma screens, CRT & LCD screens, laptops, copiers, fax machines, calculators, keyboards / mice, stereo systems, cell phones, telephones, speakers, VCR /DVD players, printers, and power supplies.

Canyon High School AP Environmental Science Class is sponsoring an event on Sat. Jan. 8, from 10 am - 4 pm, in the student parking lot at 19300 Nadal St. Santa Clarita, CA 91351. Funds raised will go toward offsetting Advanced Placement fees for students, currently $86 per test. Electronic Recyclers International is the authorized collector. More information: Mike Motherspaw, 661.252.6110 x. 155.

Valencia High School Softball is sponsoring an event on Sat. Jan. 8, from 10 am - 3 pm, in the parking lot at 27801 Dickinson Dr. Valencia, 91355. More information: Donna Lee, 661.294.1188.

Golden Valley High School is sponsoring an event on Sat. Jan. 22 from 9 am - 3 pm, in the school parking lot at 27051 Robert C. Lee Pkwy, Santa Clarita CA 91350. Fundraising proceeds will benefit athletic programs and activities for Golden Valley students. Global e-Recyclers is the authorized collector. Hart High School is sponsoring an event on Sat. and Sun, Jan. 22 & 23 from 9 am - 4 pm, in the front circular drive at 24825 Newhall Ave, Newhall, 91321. Greenview Resource Management is the authorized collector. More information: Contact the school, 661.259.7575.

Electronic Waste is any consumer electronic equipment that has reached its "end-of-life" or "end-of-usage", whether in full or non-working condition. It includes most electronics or electric appliances with a cord or circuit board, such as listed above. Currently, 56% of American households have functional e-products that they no longer use. Seventy percent of heavy metals, and 40% of lead and mercury contents found in today's landfills come from E-Waste. Additionally, recent federal mandates require that television stations switch from analog format to digital format, which makes many televisions obsolete.

With E-Waste events throughout the Santa Clarita Valley in the next few weeks, local residents have the opportunity to properly dispose of electronic waste, while supporting many excellent programs at local public high schools.
