THE SANTA CLARITA GRAFFITI TASK FORCE

is committed to ridding our community of graffiti – but we need your help to do it!

Keep our city graffiti free by reporting it if you see it.

Call 25-CLEAN (252-5326)

1.  Graffiti is illegal, ugly and expensive to remove.
2.  Graffiti is a crime that affects us all.
3.  It can lower property values, make people feel unsafe, reduce business patronage and encourage other types of crime.
4.  Graffiti vandals have no respect for private or community property and no regard for the negative impacts of their actions. They do it for the "thrill".
5.  Their aim is to impress their peers and strengthen their reputations by putting their graffiti tags in as many places as possible. Graffiti that is left intact attracts more graffiti – and the longer it remains, the greater the gratification for perpetrators. It also suggests a community that does not care or is unable to deal with the problem.

How Does Graffiti Hurt?
Safety
- Patrons of buildings, parks, or public facilities where graffiti vandalism has occurred may feel that if graffiti is tolerated, then more serious crimes, such as theft and assault, may also go unchallenged.

Clean-Up Cost - According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “an estimated $12 billion a year is spent cleaning up graffiti in the United States.” According to our Santa Clarita Graffiti task force...graffiti the size of a "business card" costs $416.00 - and that's just for them showing up!  More costs are incurred depending on what it takes to get it cleaned up!!

Some of the Consequences:

"Tag You're It"

(A short film by the City of Santa Clarita about the consequences of graffiti vandalism.)

1. Felony record.

2. Full restitution costs (what it costs for the damages$$$)

3. Community Service

4. Juvenile Hall or Jail time!

MOVIE OF THE WEEK: Viewing in class on Wed. Sept.16th

"Viva La Causa":

This movie focuses on the grape strike and boycott led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta in the 1960's. It tells the story of how the powerless stood up to the powerful and gained their victory, not by violence and weapons, but by their strong will.  A dedicated coalition of people from diverse classes, races and religions stood together for justice, proving that the mightiest walls of oppression can be toppled when people are united and their cause is just.
